They stormed beaches with names that resonate in history. They steered landing craft teeming with scared and seasick troops to the shores of France and Italy and Iwo Jima and Okinawa. They jumped from planes behind enemy lines, mere teenagers. They fired torpedoes at enemy ships and twin 50-caliber machine guns from the tail of a B-17 at menacing Messerschmitts. They dodged enemy fire unloading ships and moving supplies to the front. They cared for the wounded. This week, 108 Charlotte-area World War II veterans, ages 82 to 97, mustered for a daylong trip to Washington, D.C., as part of the Rotary District 7680's twice-yearly Flight of Honor to view the National World War II Memorial - many for the first time.
